6 manly outings to celebrate Father's Day with your dad

A round of golf? It’s been overdone. Maybe quality grilling in the backyard? Ho-hum. And forget about gifting a tie. This year, honor Dad a more thoughtful gift like a memorable outing, something he’ll remember for years to come. Here are some ideas to spark your creativity:

Marlins Game

The Fish are in town Father’s Day weekend hosting the Colorado Rockies for a three-game home series. Sunday’s game is at 1:10 p.m. and as an added bonus, they’re giving away Don Mattingly t-shirts. Mattingly, the Marlins manager, was first baseman for the New York Yankees for 14 years. And you gotta chow at the game so you can opt for a traditional hot dog or try a roast pork sandwich. Better yet, buy him tickets by The Clevelander Bar at the park, there’s a pool and full bar. 501 Marlins Way, Little Havana, 305-480-1300; 1-877-MARLINS miami.marlins.mlb.com

Concrete Beach Brewery

Brewery tour

Let Dad in on all the craft brew rage with a tour Wynwood’s finest. Or perhaps western Miami-Dade is more convenient in which case there’s a brewery in Doral. In Wynwood you can park and check out the murals while doing a Brewery walk. Visit Wynwood Brewing, J Wakefield and Concrete Beach, tasting your way through their extensive menus. In Doral MIA Brewing is tucked in a non-descript warehouse-looking area but once inside, the atmosphere is anything but. Dad can chow down on some tasty wings and other fare from a large menu, as carefully crafted as their signature brews. Check out the locations for all these in our extensive brewery and beer bars listings.

Homestead Speedway

Is Dad into races? Has he always dreamed of being behind the wheel an exotic car like a Lamborghini? Take him to Homestead Speedway where there are several experiences lined up, one pre-Father’s Day and the other post-Father’s Day. On June 5 he can take a lap around the track in either a Lamborghini Gallardo, Ferrari F430 or a sporty Audi R8 as part of the Miami Exotic Auto Racing Experience. Or wait a week after Father’s Day when on June 25 and 26 the Sports Club Cars of America where Dad can drive as well as work on a crew for a complete race day experience. Homestead Speedway, One Ralph Sanchez Speedway Blvd., Homestead, 305-230-5000, details here.

Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino

Go just across the Broward County line into Hallandale and spend the day at Gulfstream Park watching the races or playing poker or the slots. Post times are at 1:15 p.m. either Saturday or Sunday. The best seats are outside in the stands which feature a grand fountain in the middle and jumbo screen television. If hunger strikes, grab a bite and a beer at one of several cool spots here, like Rok:Brgr Burger Bar + Gastropub, Yard House or Starting Gate Stone Crab & Oyster Bar. WWE Smackdown

The Miami Heat no longer dominate the American Airlines Arena but there are plenty of other events at the AAA, like WWE Smackdown on June 28. John Cena, The Big Show, The Miz and the WWE Divas will all be there. Yes, it’s a week or so after Father’s Day but this might be just the bonding experience you’re looking for with Dad. Maybe wrestling is something you share in common. Or this could just be a fun, wild night out watching these guys go at it in the ring. 601 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, 786-777-1000 www.aaarena.com

Xtreme Action Park

Dad will love this and so will you because they’re treating him to complimentary laps around the track on his day. At Xtreme Action Park, he can pick from the pro karts or the super karts which reach speeds of up to 65 MPH. They’ll give Dad a one-day race license, a race sock and a souvenir Coca-Cola cup filled with the soft drink (the event is sponsored by Coca-Cola). Once he’s done putting pedal to the metal, bowl a few games or hang out at the arcade. 5300 N. Powerline Rd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-491-6265. www.xtremeactionpark.com
