There’s a lot of playing going on this weekend, whether it’s playing music, games or sports. We’ve got the free and cheap highlights here:
Do you like the sounds of Haitian music or melodic jazz or perhaps both combined? Not a problem — we’ve got all three this weekend:
• Immerse yourself in Haitian culture for free on July 15 with the popular recurring monthly event, “Sounds of Little Haiti” in Miami’s designated-as-such neighborhood. Music fans will enjoy listening to System Band live, coupled with neighborhood art studios, restaurants, retail shops and venues that are all open to the public.
• Meanwhile, in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood, acclaimed jazz vocalist Kevin Mahogany performs live July 15 at Ball & Chain lounge. There’s no cover charge to enjoy his intimate beautiful voice.
• Then, on July 17, listen to Chardavoine’s Creole Jazz Project live in the courtyard in Miami Beach while enjoying the summer weather.
Just the mention of a pig roast and mojito bar is enough to get me off my comfortable couch. The Ludlam Trail Summer Series presents a free “Havana Night” on July 16 at AD Barnes Park complete with, wait for it, a pig roast and Hispanic fare, mojito bar, domino tournament, cigar roller, salsa band, salsa instructors, bounce house, and a face painter.
We love to go down south to the Deering Estate at Cutler, especially when the admission is free for “Play Days.” On July 17, the historic site off Biscayne Bay (not to be confused with its sister site, Vizcaya) opens its gates for free with activities that include everything from fly-fishing demonstrations to tropical fruit displays to $10 mini-canoe tours to a birthday bash for Charles Deering who was born on July 31, 1852. I’m not sure why but folks are encouraged to wear superhero attire. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
HistoryMiami museum celebrates the opening of its new exhibition Beyond the Game: Sports and the Evolution of South Florida with a free party on July 16 complete with a mascot, crafts, music, and even a hockey rink. The exhibition features everything from jai alai and horse racing to boxing and power boat racing.
