5 Things You Didn't Know About Taylor Swift

Downtown Miami’s AmericanAirlines Arena is blessed to present two of the biggest pop concerts of the year in the span of one week, hosting Puerto Rican sensation Ricky Martin on Saturday, and sweet, humble hit machine Taylor Swift on Tuesday.

And while everyone knows that Ricky is Mr. “Livin’ la Vida Loca” and Taylor loves to “Shake It Off,” we thought fans might like to dig a little deeper before catching their shows at the AAA.

Below, then, are five things you might not have known about Taylor. For five things about Ricky, click here.

TAYLOR SWIFT

1. In an era when pop princesses are created to sing pretty and look even prettier, Swift is an anomaly, having legitimately written most of her songs. And her creativity goes beyond songwriting: As a child, she won a national poetry contest with her entry “Monster in My Closet,” and she wrote a novel at age 14 called “A Girl Named Girl,” about a mother who was hoping for a son but instead gives birth to a girl (no, it’s not autobiographical).

2. When Kanye West infamously interrupted Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards show for her hit “You Belong with Me” winning Best Music Video, she shook it off and handled it with grace and class, and even presented her so-called nemesis with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at this year’s VMAs. The non-feud was officially snuffed out when Kanye sent Swift an enormous bouquet of white roses a week later.

3. Swift was named after legendary singer-songwriter James Taylor; in 2012, it came full-circle, as he invited her to perform with him at his annual Tanglewood concert in his home state of Massachusetts. They sang his classic “Fire and Rain,” plus her hits “Love Story” and “Ours.”

4. Swift is enjoying unprecedented success: “Our Song,” from her 2006 self-titled debut album, made her the youngest person to single-handedly write and sing a No. 1 country song, with Rolling Stone praising its “insanely hooky sing-song melody that’s as Britney as it is Patsy.” Swift’s latest album “1989” – which spawned the hits “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space,” “Style,” “Bad Blood” and the new “Wildest Dreams” – sold 1,287,000 copies in its first week, making her the only act in history to have three albums top a million in their first weeks of sale. And she’s the only person to be named Billboard mag’s Woman of the Year twice.

5. Swift has dated her share of men in show-biz, including Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner (the “Twilight” series), John Mayer, Jake Gyllenhaal and now Grammy-winning Scottish DJ/producer Calvin Harris (“We Found Love,” “Outside”), who is set to perform in Miami three days after her show, at the House of Horror Amusement Park at Miami International Mall. The winsome twosome practically define the term “power couple,” having combined to earn more than $146 million over the past year, according to Forbes.
