If you’re looking for entertainment this weekend in Miami that is easy on your wallet, we’ve got the highlights and the list includes Oktoberfest parties, Latin jazz, a dog happy hour, free coffee and a tour of the performing arts center.
Hoist a beer stein for Oktoberfest
So you thought Miami was only about Latin America? Tsk, tsk.
Miamians celebrate all kinds of culture, especially when it involves beer. We turn Irish for St. Patrick’s Day and German for Oktoberfest, which leads me to tell you that the Oktoberfest parties in Miami begin this weekend. The larger ones this weekend include the parties at Fritz & Franz in Coral Gables, Samuel Adams in Wynwood, (both are free admission) and at Marlins Park in Little Havana (tickets to that one begin at $16). There are more, however, so click on the link and pick the one that fancies you. Don’t forget to don your best Bavarian costume.
Dance to the Latin jazz beat
On the evening of Sept. 30, head out to the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in North Miami to listen to Conjunto Progreso, one of my favorite Miami bands. (Full disclosure: I hired them for my wedding many, many years ago.) If you enjoy traditional Cuban music and Latin jazz, their music will get you on your feet and dancing in no time. Latin jazz at MOCA is free once a month and the bands that play are as varied as jazz itself.
Bring the pooch for happy hour
Pooches and their owners may want to go to the W Miami hotel in Brickell on Sept. 30 for a “yappy hour,” or a doggy happy hour and some pampering. Listen to music from the DJ, take in the views of Biscayne Bay, sip cocktails and savor good food all while hanging out with your canine and other dog lovers.
Get free coffee for National Coffee Day
Coffee lovers rejoice! On Sept. 29, it’s National Coffee Day and that means some participating places are offering a free cup of the brew to start off your morning. Get your buzz on with some delicious coffee at Dunkin Donuts, Krispy Kreme, LaMar’s Donuts, and the W Miami hotel.
Tour the Broward Center for the Performing Arts
Peek behind the scenes of theatrical productions with a free theater tour of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale on Oct. 2. The free tours are about 11:30 a.m. the first Sunday of most months, when the theater schedule permits, amid the festivities of Sunday Jazz Brunch.
