5 free and cheap events in Miami this weekend – Aug 26-28

Getting down at Viernes Culturales in Little Havana. Pedro Portal/El Nuevo Herald

Is the weekend here yet? Well, now is the time to prepare for a free and cheap weekend. (What other kind of weekend would there be, right?) Dixieland jazz, salsa with Cuban art, ol’ sentimental movies and fresh farmers markets are just some of the things to do this weekend. Enjoy:

Dixieland jazz

This Aug. 26, check out The Glyn Dryhurst Dixieland Jazz Band as they perform outdoors at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami. The concert is free and concertgoers can check out the museum, which is open by donation. Parking also is free. It’s a great way to check out the current exhibits and listen to good music.

Also on Aug. 26, Little Havana celebrates Viernes Culturales with its usual free monthly festival of arts and music. The cultural event features dancing under the stars, domino games, cigar rollers, cafecitos, mojitos and works by local artists and artisans. It’s a good time for all ages.

Night owls who love movies will want to get in on the discount late-night movie screenings at the Coral Gables Art Cinema at 11:45 p.m. on Saturdays. Admission is $7 and includes free popcorn. The movie featured on Aug. 27 is “Adaptation” (2002) starring Nicolas Cage and Meryl Streep.

And for the young ones, who don’t want to give up summer without a fight, “The Peanuts Movie” will be playing Aug. 26 at Grapeland water park in Miami. Get splashed while watching the $5 dive-in movie.

Farmers markets

Have you gone to any one of the numerous farmers markets we have in Miami-Dade County? Chances are, there is one near you. Every Saturday, Sunday and Monday, there’s an open market that sells local fresh produce and food. Taste new bread recipes, luscious tomatoes, and even fresh fish at one of the markets. Many also have local artisans showcasing their arts and crafts. We Miamians are pretty lucky to have agriculture fields harvesting goods practically year-round.

Fort Lauderdale

With the surf and ocean breezes as a beautiful backdrop, Friday Night Sound Waves events offer free entertainment at Fort Lauderdale Beach. On Aug. 26, Celebration Band will be performing.
