Steve Angello is ready to celebrate a #DECADE
Swedish House Mafia may be over, but this third of the super-trio has a packed schedule for Miami Music Week
You know him from his work with the superstar DJ trio Swedish House Mafia, but Steve Angello is one of the select few electronic music artists whose name extends far beyond performing and recording.
SHM is no more, but Angello continues to thrive, both solo and with his label, SIZE Records, which has launched the careers of several of the world’s top DJs, including deadmau5 and Avicii.
You can catch Angello spinning energetic house on Thurs., March 27, at #DECADE, his party celebrating the 10-year anniversary of SIZE, alongside Thomas Gold, Sunnery Janes & Ryan Marciano, AN21 and Max Vangeli and many more. The party marks the debut of the RC Cola Plant in the Wynwood Arts District.
Angello will also headline the Ultra Music Festival – his fifth appearance at UMF – on Sun., March 30.
Your two big gigs during MMW are #DECADE and headlining at Ultra. I imagine your sets will be pretty different?
At Decade I will be playing one of my more traditional 2014 festival sets versus Ultra, where I will be showcasing my upcoming album.
This year Ultra is scaled back to one weekend again, rather than two. Do you think two was too much?
Not really. A lot of the big festivals these days are expanding to multiple weekends.
Do you tailor your sets differently depending on whether you’re spinning inside or outside?
No, they aren't tailored differently because a show is outdoors or indoors, but I definitely play darker and more techy for club shows compared to my festival sets.
Are you performing anywhere else during MMW?
Only Decade besides Ultra. I wanted to keep things simple yet unique this year for Miami.
What else can we expect from the night at Decade – will you be breaking out some new tracks?
Decade will be an event that neither Miami nor this industry has ever seen before. Come and see what surprises we have in store.
Do you know anything about the venue, RC Cola Plant? Decade is the first major music event there.
Yes, of course – I’ve been there to scout it out personally. It's a rugged, raw space in Wynwood Walls that’s perfect for what we are trying to accomplish.
What inspired you to start your own label back in 2003?
I wanted to find an outlet for all of my music that I was producing at the time, and creating SIZE was the easiest way to share it with the world.
And now it boasts one of the most star-studded artist rosters – did you have that vision from the beginning?
Of course, I always wanted to expand the label, but never knew how massive it would become. Now looking back, it’s truly a great feeling to have our SIZE Family.
Who are a few of the lesser-known SIZE artists that you think could blow up into superstars like Avicii or deadmau5?
I think all of our artists on SIZE have the potential to become huge acts on their own, but it really depends on how much effort they put into the business to solidify their place.
Do you miss Swedish House Mafia, and is the door open for future work together?
I miss the guys once in awhile. There are no plans for the foreseeable future.
You perform a lot in Vegas – how does its EDM scene compare to Miami’s?
Vegas is a tourist stop where the fans attending the shows change every time. Miami will always be the same local fans, and their excitement for my music is always unbelievable.
What’s a perfect day in the life of Steve Angello?
To spend the whole day splitting time between the studio and my girls. Family is always the most important.
