Stay in with sandwiches, salads & dessert from Sweetness Bake Shop in South Miami

You may think Sweetness Bake Shop & Café is all about crazy good cupcakes, like Bananas Foster with cinnamon-rum-cream cheese frosting, or the over-the-top fried Oreos that come out of their dessert truck, Sugar Rush. But this café just west of South Miami also whips out hearty sandwiches that will make you think twice about saving room for dessert.

Stuffed into a shoe-sized, whole-wheat wrap: avocado, lime, cilantro, red onion and chicken, with mango spread supplying another layer of flavor. The turkey apricot melt, with roasted turkey, apricot jam, brie, Thousand Island dressing and mixed greens, came warm on Italian white bread, with fetching grill marks across the top.

Savory options also include the mojo chicken with seared breast meat, onion mojo and red peppers and the veg panini with roasted eggplant, portabello mushrooms, red peppers and fontina cheese, both on French bread. Daily lunch specials range from burgers to melts.

The half-dozen cupcakes, which change daily, might include maple bacon topped with maple butter cream and a garnish of bacon and sea salt. For takeout, they’re packaged in half-size Styrofoam coffee cups with lids; sandwiches go in clear plastic cases.

Dessert shots are the perfect ending. Our lemon blueberry one was two spoonfuls of tart cream and cake, with fresh blueberries and whipped cream layered in between.
