Spa fancy: Myra & Co.
At this South Miami spa staple, you can work out, eat and get pampered. Now that's a threesome.

The lowdown: Myra Porter opened her first hair salon and spa in 1979 in a little house that sat on what is now the parking lot behind her current spa. She was 21 at the time. Porter eventually went to law school. She liked cosmetology better. "It's called transformation," said Porter, who was raised in Miami by Irish parents who arrived via the RMS Queen Mary.
More recently, Porter opened what she calls a "movement center'' next door with Pilates machines and state-of-the-art, vibrating Power Plates machines, said to dramatically increase strength. Shaquille O'Neal has said he uses a Power Plate before games. There's also a cellphone-free zone and an on-site chef whose lunches are so tasty, some people stop by just for take-away.
The vibe: Homey, comfy, friendly. The relaxed nature of this spa makes it feel a little like Myra's living room, right down to the antique clock.
The highlights: The Apiderm Imperfection Correction treatment is a laser session to remove skin tags or stubborn pores, at $3 a minute for 10 minutes minimum; an Oatmeal Blueberry Body Buff for sensitive, irritated skin is $75 for 30 minutes, or $65 when added to a massage; the Head-to-Toe treatment combines a spa facial
with a manicure and pedicure, $175 for two hours.

Not a good experience. For this kind of money, I expected something really swanky, with a cushy couch, a robe, and a complimentary cappucino. My mom and I went for a "spa day". We each had massages, which were fine, (but massages are always nice; I've never had a BAD massage). Mom really liked her facial, but we both disliked the manicures and pedicures. The armchairs are uncomfortable, (for this price, can't they afford those massage pedicure chairs with the foot bath attachments?), and for the feet, they used METAL BOWLS. No plug in massage tub, just metal mixing bowls filled with water. For a $40 pedicure! My advice: go South on US 1 to any walk-in nail place, pay $20, sit in the comfy chair, and count all the money you saved. The manicure was worse. It's 30 hours later, and all the polish peeled off already. My nails were oily from the paraffin, and the polish didn't stick to them. I've had $8 manicures that lasted at least three days. This was a $30 manicure that cost about a buck an hour! $30 for 30 hours! Also, mom's manicurist spoke NO english at all. I stopped by the front desk between treatments, and there was a cake dish of mini cupcakes. I asked if these were for the guests, and the cashier said yes. I ate one, and they added $2 to the bill!! Then I asked for a Sprite Zero, and they added another buck. For this kind of money, throw in a cupcake and a soda, for the love of God. If you want a swanky spa day, go elsewhere. If you want a great mani/pedi, go elsewhere. If you want a great massage, keep looking. Stay away from Myra and Company unless you're jonesing for a $2 mini cupcake and a manicure that lasts a day.... Read more
