Spa Fancy: Monsieur
Real men get manis.
By Fred Gonzalez
The lowdown: Men don't always admit they like going to a spa, but Monsieur has created an atmosphere that could have the manliest of men sharing their discovery. Opened by sisters Golnar and Gigi Ghovanloo six months ago, their inspiration was to create a man-friendly zone where he could get anything from a manicure to a massage. "My sister and I were at a spa facility getting a manicure, and there was a bridal party there getting ready, so it was like a girls spa day,'' Golnar said. "And this guy in a suit walked in and totally felt awkward. So we thought, why not a spa place for a guy? One where he is welcomed and feels like he is in his domain.''
Now, with a steady stream of regulars and referrals, this Coral Gables spot pride's itself on being a boys club with (grooming) benefits. "Every client gets to meet my sister or me so we can converse at a special level. We know what drink they like, and how they like to get in and out. And the guys make new business contacts here, too. We help take the network guesswork out of meeting people."
The 'hood: Coral Gables has plenty of street parking, but if you don't want to be seen walking into a spa of any sort, there's complimentary parking behind the building and a private code to enter from the back.
The vibe: Totally manly. Upon entry there's a bowl of citrus water waiting for you, as well as fresh, hot towels. The bottom floor, replete with marble, has three plasma flat screens ready for you to tune in to CNN, CNBC, ESPN or whatever you prefer to watch as you get your hair serviced (shaves, cuts or scalp massage). Massage rooms await for everything from a Swedish massage to massages with lava shells or hot stones. And there's a mani and pedi station as well. They also add signature touches, like a scalp massage during a haircut, a calf massage during a pedi or a forearm massage after a mani.
The highlights: Upstairs is where the benefits shine. There are private meeting rooms for business clients and a cigar lounge with a plasma TV and complimentary Bacardi beverages. There's also Heineken on tap, as well as coffee and espresso. Need a shirt? No problem. You can custom order one from custom-designed business shirt and guayaberra company Marce, and it will be ready in 6 hours (if ordered by 1 p.m.). A tailor comes on site in 15 minutes, you choose colors, cuffs, etc., and the cost is $250 on up. WiFi is also available.
Memberships will be offered at the beginning of the 2009, and approved members will have the ability to use the building for anything - meetings, luncheons, depositions, etc. There will be an annual fee, but you can create custom membership packages.
The sweet deal: Mention this article on Miami.com and receive a complimentary manicure with any purchase of $50 or more (includes services and Monsieur products).
