Shark Tank star Kim Daisy of Daisy Cakes coming to SoBe
Will serve her famous flavors at two events
The SoBe Wine & Food Fest is about wine and food — and dessert. This year, lucky attendees of two events will get to try a “slice of love’’ from Daisy Cakes, owned by South Carolina baker Kim Adams Nelson. Her four-layer confections were recently featured on ABC’s Shark Tank, in which contestants try to get funding (50K) and publicity for their startup businesses. It worked; as of next month, Kim will be selling her sweets on QVC. Nelson, also known as Kim Daisy, will serve her top-selling flavors (carrot, red velvet, lemon and chocolate) Thursday night during two sold-out events, Moet Hennessy’s Q at the Delano and Saturday night’s The Best Thing I Ever Ate “Late Night Bites & Sweets’’ at the Ritz-Carlton South Beach.
We caught up with the mother of three before her trip:
How did you get the name of your business?
Daisy was my great aunt, and she and my two grandmothers taught me how to cook. They taught me how to make gravy and roll dough to make biscuits and fry chicken and all those good things we call comfort food these days. That was just my standard diet growing up in South Carolina. All the recipes are passed down through generations, all natural, made from scratch.
Are you excited to come to the food festival?
I cannot wait to get there, in that environment where we share the common bond of loving food with being entertained. I really want to meet Emeril [Lagasse]. I love watching him cook on TV and his energy. I am also a fan of Rachael Ray and Geoffrey Zakarian. I have reservations at Sra Martinez and Michael’s Genuine so I am also looking forward to that.
Your life is consumed with baking cakes. Do you ever get sick of them?
We really don’t eat that much cake anymore as we are just inundated. But I tell you the other night, I made chocolate cake and put some strawberries and whipped cream on top and said to my husband, ‘Oh my gosh, this is so delicious I can’t believe I made this!’ It was so moist and fluffy at the same time. We are big eaters in my house; we never eat a half cup serving of anything. Big slices of pie, big bowls of ice cream. The quantities are large but we want it to be good.
