A DAZZLING DOZEN: 12 Critic's Picks for the Season of the Arts
Yuja Wang with Michael Tilson Thomas and the New World Symphony
Oct. 5-6 at New World Center in Miami Beach
Even in these days of dizzying virtuosity among young keyboard firebrands, Wang’s powerful bravura remains a phenomenon.
Robi Draco Rosa in Tour Vida
Oct. 26 at the Fillmore Miami Beach
This Puerto Rican artist has had one of the strangest trajectories in pop music. He was a Ricky Martin compatriot in the teen pop group Menudo and a key co-songwriter on hits like Livin‘ La Vida Loca before striking out with his own dark, rich pop-rock fusion.
Florida Grand Opera’s Mourning Becomes Electra
Nov. 7 and 9 at Broward Center for the Performing Arts
Widely regarded as one of the greatest American operas, the work is adapted from Eugene O’Neill’s play, which features a family haunted and ultimately destroyed by deep secrets.
Fear Up Harsh
Nov. 7-25 at Adrienne Arsht Center
The still-young Zoetic Stage begins the season with an original work by one of its playwright-founders, Christopher Demos-Brown, whose Fear Up Harsh focuses on a Medal of Honor winner with a hidden past.
The Book of Mormon
Nov. 26-Dec. 22 at Broward Center for the Performing Arts
Tony Award-winning, in-your-face smash by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone (plus Avenue Q’s Robert Lopez). You’ll get why the deliberately outrageous, sometimes gross and oddly sweet musical is an enduring hit.
Dec. 5-8 at the Miami Beach Convention Center
The art world holds its annual meeting of the minds in Miami Beach, with more than 250 leading galleries presenting works by artists across many platforms plus film presentations, public artworks and the multiple satellite fairs scattered throughout Miami.
PAMM’s Big Jam
Dec. 5 at Pérez Art Museum Miami
Pérez Art Museum Miami opens its Herzog & de Meuron designed doors with a blow-out celebration for members and VIPs where they can check out the Museum’s inaugural exhibit “Ai Weiwei: According to What,” party with multimedia duo Los Jaichackers, and explore the space that hopes to become the heart of downtown Miami’s arts community.
Jonah Bokaer/Daniel Arsham in Occupant
Dec. 6 at the Adrienne Arsht Center
Former Merce Cunningham dancer Jonah Bokaer and his collaborator, visual artist Daniel Arsham, create dance-performance pieces that meld intellectual rigor, visual beauty and wit with theatricality.
Totó Lo Momposina
Dec. 15 at Hollywood Arts Park
The inimitable Totó Lo Momposina has been called the Celia Cruz of Colombia, internationally famed for her powerful, soulful and gutsy performances of traditional Colombian music.
Antony and Cleopatra
Jan 11-Feb. 9 at the Colony Theatre
Miami’s soaring young playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney crafts a set-in-Haiti version of William Shakespeare’s turbulent historic play, moving the action to the late 1700s on the eve of the Haitian revolution. The production is a collaborative effort by the Royal Shakespeare Company, New York’s Public Theater and South Florida’s GableStage.
Miami City Ballet Program III — West Side Story Suite and Episodes
Feb. 14-Mar. 2 in Dade, Broward and West Palm Beach.
They can dance, but can they sing? Miami City Ballet ventures into musical theater with West Side Story Suite, a distilled version of Jerome Robbins’ Broadway classic plus the company premiere of George Balanchine’s rarely performed Episodes.
April 12 at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center
McIntyre, one of the sharpest choreographic talents in classical dance in the 2000s, left New York for Boise, Idaho, and total civic support in 2008, enabling him and his dancers to keep making vital, adventurous and original contemporary dance.
