The goods: Fresh seafood and rock and roll may seem like an odd combination but it seems to work at Sea Rock. Located off Purdy Ave, down the street from the space-age Publix, this newcomer is both a seafood joint and a live music lounge.
Ambiance: Opened by a husband and wife team with fierce rock loyalties, the restaurant is a cavernous ocean-inspired space with wavy neon light fixtures, a wall of drum cymbals and a white marble bar. There's live music on the weekends and all-night happy hour for those nights when you want to enjoy a drink on their outdoor patio.
The grub: Middle Eastern and Latin-influenced seafood. The owners are Lebanese and Colombian and bring the flavors of both traditions to a menu of ceviches, salads and cooked fish dishes. Prices skew a bit high given the neighborhoody vibe. Starters are $9-$15, sandwiches are about $14, mains average $26 and sides are $5.
The rock theme extends to the menu descriptions which require a bit of studying (it might have been better to have straightforward names for dishes instead of wading through dishes dubbed Queen and Led Zeppelin to find what you're in the mood for). Dinner starts with a generous basket of warm pita and dish of olive oil mixed with zaatar, a Middle Eastern spice mix composed of sumac, sesame seed and hyssop. Go for ceviches like the “Hendrix” (king salmon, kiwi and coconut milk), the “Foo Fighters”(corvina, olives and roasted garbanzo beans) and the “Green Day Salad”made with endive and radicchio topped with roasted apples, walnuts and gorgonzola. Fish dishes include pan seared salmon served with creamy garlic sauce and a seared scallops bathed in champagne and vanilla sauce. If you're not into fish you have limited options – a filet mignon or pistachio-crusted lamb chops accompanied by a yogurt sauce spiked with citrus and mint. Sides include a rich yucca mash topped with a melted cheese crust.
Verdict: Go for the innovative ceviches and chill atmosphere, stay for the live rock.
