Recap: The 2013 iHeartRadio Pool Party and Y100 Mack-A-Poolooza on Miami Beach
Miami.com recaps the 2013 iHeartRadio Pool Party at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach and the Y100 Mack-A-Palooza at the Clevelander hotel.
Miami knows how to throw a good pool party and this past weekend was no exception, with two of the biggest pool parties of the year passing through: the Y100 Mack-A-Poolooza pool party at the Clevelander and the iHeartRadio pool party at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach.
Over at the Fontainebleau, iHeartRadio had a day full of festivities with a daytime pool party and a nighttime concert with some of music’s most popular acts. To kick off the day, Jason Derulo had a performance that ended with a splash when he jumped into the Fontainebleau’s pool. Revelers “loved it” when Icona Pop spun a DJ set and sang their hit song. The fan favorites were newcomers Krewella, who debuted their newest track “Live for the Night” at the party. Things heated up in the evening, with celebrities walking the red carpet and a wild night of performances.
LL Cool J and Audrina Patridge had their photos taken inside the popular club Arkadia, which acted as a red carpet and meet-and-greet area for the evening. Dutch DJ Afrojack kicked off the night and had the crowd going wild with heavy beats from his tracks like “Take Over Control” and “Rock the House” with bass so heavy it shook the glass windows of the hotel.
Those familiar with Ke$ha know that she’s a wild performer and her set was one of the most bizarre Miami has seen, with dancing eyeballs, unicorns and orcas to boot. She sang her major hits like “Blow” and “We R Who We R” and also more obscure tracks like “Dirty Love” (which she says she wrote with Miami native Iggy Pop). Her theatrics included spraying whipped cream all over the audience and driving around in a toy rainbow car.
The evening closed off with Mr. Worldwide himself, Miami native Pitbull. The star had seemingly endless amounts of energy and enough to charisma to convert his haters into fans (at least for the night). He turned out hits like “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)” and “Rain Over Me” with aplomb for the enthusiastic crowd. Miami’s heat didn’t get the best of him, flirting with his female dancers while he was sweating through his shirt which was dripping wet by the end of the performance.
At Y100 Mack-A-Poolooza, hundreds of partiers gathered early on Friday to spend a day poolside at the Clevelander. Early arrivals came to find an empty pool but that was only temporary; the fire department came to the rescue by pumping water from fire hydrants into the pool to the delight of amphibious pariters.Only in Miami is a pool party without water an emergency worthy of Miami Beach’s firefighters.
The main attraction at the party was world-renown DJ Calvin Harris, who played an hour-long set at the height of afternoon. He shared with partiers some of his most famous hits, including his Rihanna collaboration “We Found Love” and the anthemic “Feels So Close,” which had everyone cheering. He also included remixes of Avicii and also the latest Fatboy Slim track “Eat Sleep Rave Repeat” (very apropos for the event).
The other highlight was a brief appearance by Miley Cyrus at the event, with the crowd pulling out their phones to take her picture. She shared the stage with DJ Obscene, who played her new track “We Can’t Stop” for her to twerk on stage to.
