"The Re:Generation Music Project"
"The Re:Generation Music Project" documents musical collaborations that cross genres and generations.
2/15/2012
It can be amusing to conjure up the unlikeliest musical pairings you can think of. Air Supply and Rick Ross. Taylor Swift and Black Sabbath. Kenny G and Eminem. Lou Reed and Metallica (oh, wait - that somehow really happened, and it wasn't pretty).
Some pretty big names in electronic music took this concept beyond the mere hypothetical, creating a song with artists that are way out of their comfort zones. The results can be seen in "The Re:Generation Music Project," a documentary film directed by Amir Bar Lev (who also did "My Kid Could Paint That" and "The Tillman Story") running at 8 p.m. Thursday and Feb. 23 at AMC Sunset Place 24, 5701 Sunset Dr., South Miami.
The film's tagline is "5 DJs Turn the Table of the History of Music," and it takes a look at the songwriting and studio process of these odd collaborations, which touch upon rock, R&B, jazz, classical and country.
You'll see dubstep DJ Skrillex hooking up with members of The Doors on the new track "Breakn' A Sweat"; The Crystal Method working with Martha Reeves of the Vandellas and The Funk Brothers on the R&B number "I'm Not Leaving"; Mark Ronson (who won a Grammy for Producer of the Year in 2008 for his work on Amy Winehouse's album "Back to Black") teaming up with an all-star cast of Erykah Badu, Trombone Shorty, Mos Def, Zigaboo Modeliste and members of The Dap Kings on the New Orleans jazz song "A La Modeliste"; DJ Premier of Gang Starr tapping NAS and Boston's Berklee Symphony Orchestra for his “Regeneration”; and electronic/trip-hop artist Pretty Lights working with country princess LeAnn Rimes and Dr. Ralph Stanley on the twangy "Wayfaring Stranger."
As DJ Premier says, "You just put me in a whole different way on how to listen."
Tickets are $11; check out www.regenerationmusicproject.com for more info.
