Here's what you missed at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach on Friday night
Star power and beach bodies fueled the start of the third installment of the iHeartRadio Ultimate Pool Party at Fontainebleau Miami Beach Friday night.
Summer was in full swing with a lineup that featured Lil Jon, Iggy Azalea, Tiesto and Ariana Grande. While each performance lasted about 30 minutes (we wanted more!), Nick Cannon served as host and hype man to break up the lapses between sets. Several guest appearances helped, too.
Here are our top three moments from night one:
3. An Ultra-esque Tiesto
A half-hour set does not do world renowned DJ Tiesto any justice. But, besides playing his obligatory mainstream hits “Red Lights,” (Neon Trees’ Tyler Glenn sang the vocals) “Wasted” and John Legend’s “All of Me” remix, it was the beginning and end of his stage time that was memorable. Tiesto fused beats that brought back nostalgic feelings of March’s Ultra Music Festival. Oh, and a new single, “Written In Reverse,” off the Dutch DJ’s latest album, “A Town Called Paradise,” helped too. Tiesto was once again the beneficiary of live vocals on this track, courtesy of Matthew Koma, who also sang on “Wasted” and, just for good measure, spent Friday morning singing alongside Afrojack on “Good Morning America” in Central Park. The only thing missing was Hardwell, who collaborated with Tiesto on the single.
2. Turned up Lil Jon
Do not ask Lil Jon for a selfie. Well, just don’t call it that. While making his rounds through the press area for photos, a reporter (not this one) asked Lil Jon for a selfie. To which he replied: “selfie is for chicks, dude.” The man behind catchy, one-word monikers like “Yeah!” was lively from the start during his pool party set. And, he brought it all the way back to 2004 for the popular Usher single too. Lil Jon ran through years of hit appearances, from LMFAO’s “Shots” to Ying Yang Twins’ “Salt Shaker.” On the latter, he stopped the song a few seconds in to establish which side was the window and which one was the wall, before the crowd rocked back and forth as the music picked up again. And, besides “Turn Down For What,” a Steve Aoki cameo for the 2011 track “Turbulence” continued the night’s house music theme, temporarily.
1. Song of the summer!
Most of the sexy, bikini-clad folks at the Fontainebleau came to hear arguably the two hottest names in music, Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea, belt out “Problem.” That alone capped an already solid night. While Grande’s set was strictly her hit songs, the live version of her voice sounded just like the studio version, a soft and breathy tune light on production. After the Boca Raton native wrapped up “The Way” and powered through the second verse on “Problem,” the crowd roared as Azalea made it back on stage for her part of the song. Azalea’s own set showcased her rapping abilities, which, outside of “Fancy,” came at a fast paced, Busta Rhymes style. Although brief, the two ladies had the performance of the night – and, safe to say, the song of the summer.
