It’s the last weekend before Christmas and, for some, that means frantic shopping and decorating.
But those of us who want to go out and celebrate have plenty of opportunities to hear free music, see free movies or otherwise have a good time without spending any money.
Friday night from 3 to 9 is the monthly Target Free Third Friday at the Miami Children’s Museum, and Saturday night is the monthly Bird Road Art Walk.
And, if you’re shopping, you might get to hear free music at the malls.
Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun Dec. 20-22.
Free Big Night in Little Haiti
A young Haitian troubadour and a children’s choir will be the lead entertainment at this month’s free Big Night in Little Haiti. The event is 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday at the Little Haiti Cultural Center in Miami. Music will be by Wanito, a 25-year-old Haitian singer, guitarist and songwriter with a musical style that blends reggae, roots, dancehall and konpa, and the children’s choir of Notre Dame d’Haiti Catholic Church. The event also includes an art exhibit in the gallery, hands-on art projects for kids and food vendors.
Free Christmas movies outdoors
Watching Christmas movies under the stars is an only-in-Florida experience. On Friday, you’ve got a choice of three free holiday films. At 6 p.m., the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne will show “Elf” on the lawn, with free popcorn. At 7 p.m., the Miami Beach Department of Parks and Recreation will show “Prancer” at the North Shore Park Bandshell. At 8 p.m., Brickell World Plaza will screen “Scrooged” outdoors.
Free concert and food truck roundup
You can sample interesting food and then hear a free concert Saturday night at Magic City Casino. The monthly Wheelin’ Deal’ Street Food Festival is 5 to 10 p.m. outdoors. Listen to a free concert indoors at Secada’s by Steve Augeri, former lead singer of Journey, at 8 p.m.
Free outdoor holiday concert at Soundscape
The New World Symphony will present a special holiday concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and you can see it free from the lawn outside. The performance will be projected on the 7,000-square-foot screen outside the New World Center in Miami Beach.
Free Italian film in Coral Gables
The Coral Gables Museum is presenting the last in a series of free Italian films at 8 p.m. Saturday in the courtyard. The movie is ”I Vicere” (“The Viceroys”), set in the mid-1800s in the last years of the Bourbon reign in Sicily and seen through the eyes of a young boy in the Uzeda family, descendents of the Viceroys of Spain. Bring your own chairs and snacks, or rent chairs and buy food.
