See stars and more during free museum days
It’s the first weekend of the month, which means free admission to a variety of South Florida museums with your Bank of America or Merrill Lynch credit or debit cards. Keep your cards in your wallet, and visit the Miami Science Museum for the free planetarium show on Friday night or the Gold Coast Railroad Museum free all day Saturday. The Miami Children’s Museum has a $10 admission special for September and is throwing itself a birthday party Saturday. The Wolfsonian-FIU is free every Friday night, and the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU is free every Saturday. The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU is always free.
Art, talk, wine, walk
You’ve got three chances to see art, discuss it with your friends, meet the artists and nab some free wine and cheese this weekend. Friday is the monthly Gables Gallery Night. Saturday night you’ve got to make a choice: the Art Center South Florida Studio Crawl in South Beach or the Coconut Grove Gallery Walk.
The sweetest sound: free
Three casinos are presenting free entertainment this week, and the only gamble is whether you’ll like the music. Indoors (you must be 21), you can see Alex del Sol on Thursday, the Jay Blue Band on Friday and Deskarga Jam on Saturday at Casino Miami Jai-Alai. Also for the over-21 group is the music of Peter Fernandez and the Open House Band at Magic City Casino on Saturday. Hialeah Park has two free outdoor concerts for all ages: Salsa Under the Stars with Timbalive at 9 p.m. Friday and Jazz in the Park with Alfredo Chacon from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Free park entry for library lovers
In honor of International Literacy Day, admission to Florida’s state parks is free Sunday for anyone who shows a library card or a library book or donates a family-friendly book. As part of the celebration, The Barnacle in Coconut Grove is hosting Books, Birds and Boats from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The $2 admission fee is waived if you bring a book to donate, show your library card or show a check-out library book.
Free play in Miami Beach
The Ground Up & Rising theater company will give two free performances of the play “Gruesome Playground Injuries” at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden (where admission is always free). The play, by Rajiv Joseph, is about a boy and a girl who meet at age 8 in the school nurse’s office and follows their journey from accident-prone kids to self-destructive adults.
