This is the weekend to listen to music, with opportunities for free concerts of Latin jazz, classical music, Afro-Cuban funk and more.
HistoryMiami and the Coral Gables Museum are both open free Saturday afternoon for special family activities, but you don’t have to have kids to drop in and see the exhibits. Saturday night, weather permitting, are the big Wynwood and Design Distict art walks.
Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun July 12-14.
Three concerts in one
The DWNTWN Miami Concert Series presents three musical acts in a free concert Friday evening at the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center. Performers will be Federico Britos, Grammy-winning violin virtuoso of both classical and jazz; Oriente, a band that mixes Cuban roots music with blues, jazz and Brazilian tones; and Yvonne Brown, a Miami jazz singer. The doors open at 7 p.m., and the concert starts at 8.
New music, with Kendall roots
Kendall Sound Art, a group of local musicians who showcase new music, will present a free concert at 3 p.m. Saturday at the West Kendall Regional Public Library. The concert will feature David Dean Mendoza, an electro-acoustic composer, viola player and world instrument specialist; Liza Seigido, performing a movement from her Mass, “Missa de la Grande Transizione”; and Lawrence W. Moore, performing his work “Frozen Aire,” for tenor saxophone and tablet. We told you it was new music.
No cages for ‘This Zoo Story’
The theater company Ground Up & Rising will present two free performances of Edward Albee’s play, “The Zoo Story,” at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday, July 14, at Miami Beach Botanical Garden. The drama is about the chance encounter of a middle-class publishing executive and an isolated and disheartened man on a bench in New York’s Central Park.
Show the kids some family-friendly culture
Saturday is Family Day on Aragon in Coral Gables. That means a $5 movie, “Where the Wild Things Are,” at 11 a.m. at the Coral Gables Art Cinema (popcorn included in the price), a free preview of the upcoming Actors Playhouse production of “The Pied Piper” at 12:30 p.m. at Books & Books and an afternoon of free crafts and free admission from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Coral Gables Museum. The $5 movie will be repeated at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Family Fun Day at HistoryMiami
HistoryMiami celebrates Family Fun Day from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, with free admission for all. This month’s theme is architecture, with a chance for children to construct their own building façade and a walking tour of the architectural jewels of downtown Miami. The event is tied to the exhibition Opa-Locka: Mirage City.
