The goods: The Pubbelly team launches Taco Belly, a lunchtime pop-up inside PB Steak.
Ambience: Taco Belly accessorizes PB Steak with sombreros and Baja-style tablecloths.
The grub: Eclectic Mexican street food. Chef Jose Mendin (Mercadito) oversees a moderately priced menu — two-for-$7 tacos and $3-$13 small plates.
Fresh-pounded guacamole is offered three ways — “gringo” with jalapeños, “Korean” with kimchi and pickled pineapple or “machete” with smoked serrano peppers. Choose hamachi, Maine lobster or mahi mahi ceviche taquitos or bite into quesadillas de elocte with charred corn and mushrooms.
Tacos are constructed from house-made tortillas and nine fillings including fried calamari, carne asada, baja or grilled pescado and chorizo. Pair with Mexican-style corn, stewed pinto beans or roasted jalapeños.
Desserts range from tres leches cake a la mode to churros with spicy chocolate ganache.
Verdict: Catch it before it closes, because this taqueria from the Pubbelly boys is only open for the summer.
