Friends with Bands & Benefits
John Tovar has done a lot of good for many Miami-based musicians. Among those he's managed: The Mavericks, Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids and Nuclear Valdez. When Tovar's mom passed away in April, his friends, including Johnny Aguillo, lead singer of the Grammy-nominated Conjunto Progresso and Y&T Records founder Rich Ulloa rallied to his side. What resulted is the Nuclear Valdez & Friends Benefit Concert for John Tovar, June 14-15 at Tobacco Road, 626 S. Miami Ave. The two-day event features acts that played The Road at some point during the '80s, '90s and '00s, including Nuclear Valdez (playing only Saturday), Charlie Pickett, Hohn and Jim Camacho from The Goods, Forget the Name, Electric Piquete, Oba Frank Lords, DJ Alan Trueba, The Dyslexic Postcards, Black Janet, Red Road, Ricky Valido and the Hialeah Hillbillies and more. Admission is $10 each night or $15 for 2-day passes. Music starts at 8:30 p.m. on both nights.
Neither here nor there, Tuesday night is the Jan Brady of weeknights. Thanks to Regent Cocktail Club's (at the Gale, 1690 Collins Ave.) Twosome Tuesdays, it's more the Marcia of the week with any two of the same cocktails at $22 all night long plus music by resident musician Brendan O'Hara. The party takes place from 9 p.m. until closing every Tuesday through the summer. As for the Wednesday after, well, that’s a whole different mess that may call for Alice.
The poolside Tiki Bar at The Palms Hotel & Spa, 3025 Collins Ave., is where you'll find many an enlightened (and possibly lit) local, taking advantage of the now through October happy hour from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. featuring $4 beers, $6 wines, $8 specialty cocktails including Summer Sangria, Skinny Pink Lemonade for those who like to imbibe without the bloat and the enticing Pain Killer featuring Cockspur Rum, fresh pineapple, fresh orange juice, coconut milk and nutmeg, and $10 chow including the Palms Burger, shredded BBQ pork sandwich and Cajun blackened Mahi sandwich. A bargain in these parts!
