The goods: SushiSamba expands its clubby sushi empire to Coral Gables in the Westin Colonnade Hotel.
Ambience: The restaurant’s trademark yellow and orange color scheme is painted across a clamorous open kitchen, busy sushi bar, indoor lounge and patio.
The grub: Asian-Peruvian dishes with a focus on maki and grilled meats. Prices are somewhat high: Starters $7-$18, rolls $10-$16 and larger plates $26-$42.
The Gables menu has 20% overlap with SushiSamba’s South Beach location. New additions include the Samba Coral Gables roll (steamed lobster, avocado, red jalapeño, spicy Japanese rice cracker, sweet chili, key lime mayo and tobiko), mushroom tobanyaki, whole roasted cauliflower and robata-grilled lamb chops, ribeye and duck breast.
Pair with deconstructed key lime tart (crispy Key lime, strawberry gelée, yuzu-basil granite, graham cracker crumbles and custard), chocolate chili peppers (Peruvian chili mousse, red pepper tuile, respberry-red pepper sorbet and chocolate crumbles) or signature cocktails featuring housemade bitters, ginger, kaffir lime and Japanese shiso leaves.
Verdict: A mainland outpost that looks, feels and tastes likes its South Beach sister.
