A Love Match
Tennis is a spectator sport that works up a sweat and thirst like no other. Which is why Veuve Clicquot Champagne is popping open its Champagne and Sushi Lounge from now through March 31 at the 2012 Sony Open. Here, you can sip on flutes of bubbly paired with sushi rolls by Sushi Maki. Veuve's Yellow Label is available by the glass at $18 or the bottle at $118. Rosé is also available for $23 per glass and $125 per bottle. In keeping with the whole spectator sport theme, it's people watching that's the sport of choice in the Veuve lounge. And at Sony, that's always a major ball too.
Setting a New Precedent
Like many a South Beach it girl, SET, 320 Lincoln Rd., has undergone some cosmetic surgery and on Friday, March 22, will unveil its new incarnation, a "departure from massive parties where glow sticks reign supreme," and where "provocatively themed shows and hands on service" will replace the old. A new decor sounds lovely, but let's take a moment to ponder the "table butlers," shall we? These hard working folks are said to do everything from making restaurant and hotel reservations to lighting cigars and walking you to the bathroom should you be incapable of doing so yourself or should you have a burning desire to feel important before you pee. There are also "flight attendants" zipping overhead a la Peter Pan via robotic zip line delivering bottles to high rollers. IPad menus will, unfortunately, include calories of the booze you are guzzling--something not even a table butler can help you avoid.
What's the Frequency?
Now open in the South of Fifth space at 814 1st St. formerly known as Jeronimo's: RADIO Pop-Up Bar, the area's first so-called pop-up bar launched by a trio of nightlife vets. RADIO, named after its former incarnation as a Gospel radio station, offers the now ubiquitous handcrafted cocktails, craft beers, champagne and snacks such as hot dogs, grilled cheese and popcorn. “RADIO is the ideal drinking destination for Miami Beach locals looking for great affordable cocktails minus the SoBe buildup,” says partner Tatanka Guerrero. On Friday night, new cocktails will be available for under $10. The bar is open seven days a week from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. but those arriving after 11 will have to enter through the alley as a courtesy to the residents in the area who will undoubtedly protest the loud noise if you make it. As for the bar's pop up status, we asked about that and were told, "It's a pop up until the end of the summer," but the building's new owner, Keith Menin, allegedly wants it to stay. Stay, er, tuned.
The Sweet Saloon, 7100 Biscayne Blvd., is the Biscayne Corridor’s go-to place for boozehounds with a sweet tooth, serving slabs of chocolate lava cake with your fancy bourbon cocktail. For those who lean on the more savory side, at 9:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. Friday March 22, Electric Piquete is spicing things up a bit with two sets of live music celebrating the birthday of guitarist Chris Correoso.
