Confesiones del Pene continues its successful run at Teatro Trail with a new addition, Univision entertainment reporter Tony Dandrades.
It’s hard to believe a man’s genitalia would have anything to confess considering its nature is to let it all hang out, so to speak. 'Confesiones del Pene' ['Penis Confessions'] by José Montero, the Spanish-language response to 'The Vagina Monologues,' attempts just that. The show has a more comic vein than its feminine counterpart, yet the readings delve into taboo subjects about masculinity like premature ejaculation, sperm donation, bedroom failures and the ubiquitous and unforgettable “first time.”
A rotating roster of talent has been performing for Miami audiences at Teatro Trail on Eighth Street for the past six weeks including Despierta America host Raúl González, television actor Shalim Ortiz and telenovela heart throbs Roberto Manrique and Alejandro Lopez. The list may expand; show publicist Eduardo Ortiz says that the success Confesiones has experienced so far has made producers hesitant to announce the end of its run.
For the August 17-19 shows, Primer Impacto Entertainment Anchor Tony Dandrades steps out of his role as reporter and joins the ensemble to bring life to the monologues. Dandrades will have to prove his acting chops next to two seasoned veterans, actor and former Menudo member Johnny Lozada and Venezuelan telenovela actor Orlando Urdaneta. Not too worry, says Ortiz, director Manuel Mendoza has a gift for getting readers to give the goods. “It’s not really important that they be actors for Confesiones del Pene, they just have to be capable of interpreting the material so it makes an impression on the audience.”
Abounding on male intimacies is a far cry from the church dramas Dandrades performed in as a youth, but he thinks he’s up for it. “The time I’ve spent in front of a camera should help me somewhat with performing in a theater, but I’m just nervous about the show because of the subject; the material is both funny and intimate. Acting is something I’ve always been interested in and I’m really excited to try something new.”
But just in case, he plans to utilize an old but reliable trick: “I’m just going to pretend like the audience is naked.”
