Whimsical, feminine and flirty — all are synonymous with designer Nanette Lepore’s creations. In town to preview her Spring 2012 collection at her Bal Harbour Shops boutique, we rub elbows with the fashion darling.
Welcome to Miami! What do you love most about the Magic City? I love coming to Miami for a weekend getaway with my family. We have a blast walking to shops, drinking milkshakes on the beach, playing parlor games at The Raleigh, and having dinner under the stars.
Love the neons and tangerines for Spring 2012. What is the story behind this particularly peppy collection? Spring 2012 is all about taking those feminine silhouettes and full skirts and giving them a jolt of electricity with neon brights and athletic spunk.
Where did you draw inspiration from when crafting the line? Originally, I was inspired by Cybill Shepherd’s style in The Last Picture Show. Then when I went to the Venice Biennale, I saw these incredible Olympic athletes and knew I wanted to infuse my collection with some of their vibrant energy.
When designing, do you have a ritual — like certain music, incense or candles burning? Traveling is what inspires me the most. I’m so excited to be in Miami to find some fresh ideas. I also visit Venice, Florence, London, and Paris every year, though I’m always looking forward to exploring new places. My last big adventure was Istanbul.
How would you describe your personal style? I love to wake up in the morning, go into my closet and see how I feel that day. I like to keep recreating my personal style.
If you had to wear one color for the rest of your life, what color would it be? Florescent orange — so I’m always glowing!
When in Miami, where do you like to shop? The flea market on Lincoln Road
Fave restaurant in Miami? Michael’s because my daughter loves the homemade soda!
Will you be coming back for Art Basel? I won’t make it this year but hopefully next!
