On Thursday, March 24 I headed to South Beach to check out the A/X Armani Exchange DJ Line-up which kicked off at 5 p.m. with a performance by DJ George Acosta, followed by a sick set by Manufactured Superstars before the surprise guest, DJ Tiësto, took over the turntables. It was a madhouse in the store - people even stopped in from the streets and parked their cars just to check out one of the biggest DJs in the world.
As soon as he dropped the track “Escape Me”, every person sang along to every lyric- it was CRAZY!
Tiesto is getting ready to rock out at the Ultra Music Festival as he closes out the night on Friday, March 25 before going on tour to promote his upcoming album Club Life, out on April 5. I caught up with him after the show.
You’ve been to ULTRA so many times, what is your favorite part of the week when you aren’t working?
I like to go to the clubs to see the different DJs. You know I love going to LIV, it’s my favorite club. The set-up is the best
You are amongst the favorites here in Miami during Ultra so how do you keep it fresh year after year?
The music is always changing you know, every year the crowd is changing, and the production is changing, but you are right, it’s every year and it never gets old to me. I still love it.
Speaking of music changing, your new album, Club Life, comes out in two weeks. What can we expect?
There are going to be a lot more vocals, very housey, more eclectic, a lot of my own tracks are on there, like “Zero 76” is on there, “C’mon” is on there, so yea, lots of new tracks.
Is there any artist that you haven’t worked with that you would like to collaborate with?
Many. I like to work with people that can make good songs. It doesn’t really matter if he is famous. If his song is good then it’s ok.
Where do you get inspiration from for all your music?
Umm, I think listening to music, traveling around the world, you go to different countries, different cultures, it makes your life more richer, that’s what you think about when you are in the studio.
What is one of your favorite things about partying in Miami?
I love Miami! I mean I have a house here. I come here all the time. It’s hard to sell anyways. I did a show for the neighbors by the pool once. Its great.
Will you be checking out any of the other acts this weekend? If so who?
Last night, I went to see Skrillex, you know, he’s a young dude, he plays Dubstep, electro and he spins really good. I’m glad I checked him out yesterday. Tonight I’m going to visit one of my really good friends, Axwell, from Swedish House Mafia.
What advice can you give to up and coming young DJs?
Well if you want to be to be a DJ, it’s also worth it to be a producer nowadays. You have to make your own tracks. It’s very important. Without making tracks I think it is very difficult to become a big DJ.
How does it feel to be ranked year after year as one of the Top DJs in the world?
It’s amazing, it’s amazing. What can you say? Charlie Sheen- “WINNING”! It’s very nice after all those years, it’s been 10 years being at the top level, and still people care. Inside the store you can see people- it was packed. I think not many artists have a long career like me. Most artists have a career like five to seven years maybe after a while it’s like, you know, down. I feel like now I am bigger then I have ever been, so it’s crazy.
What can we expect from your performance at Ultra?
Lots of new tracks… fresh, fresh sounds! Some Club Life tracks, and umm my own hits of course. It will be a good show.
