Just thinking about a cheap massage makes us all relaxed.
By Katherine WexlerThe lowdown:
Keiser fans won't appreciate this article. That's because if you want an appointment on a Saturday, you need to call a week or two in advance.
Spa-ing doesn't get any cheaper than this. A 50-minute microdermabrasion session costs $45 here, for example. A 50-minute hot stone massage is $40. And before you frown because students perform the services, know that the fledgling practitioners often have more experience than your typical, newly licensed masseur or para-medical aesthetician. They need hands-on experience to graduate from Keiser, which is fully accredited, but only the most advanced students are allowed to administer services. "Several of our students just got hired at Canyon Ranch and one at the Biltmore," Keiser Vice President Marion D'Amour said. The 'hood:
Forget the GPS. Forget Internet maps. If you don't know the Miami Lakes neighborhood well, get very specific directions when you make your appointment. The vibe:
You won't mistake this place for a luxurious med-spa. But the place is small enough and professional enough that you don't feel uncomfortable, either. Massages are performed on six tables in a large room partitioned into quasi-private stations by hanging white curtains. Aesthetic services are rendered in a similar space. Lights are dimmed and soft music played, but overall there is a somewhat medicinal feel. You're here for service, though, not the frills. The highlights:
The Body Oasis offers the following: Swedish massage (50 minutes for $30); paraffin treatment for hands and feet with mini-massage (50 minutes for $20); reflex-metal massage for the feet (50 minutes for $30) and a wood chair message (50 minutes for $30). Skin Sanctuary offers, among other things, an express facial (30 minutes for $20); pore cleansing facial (50 minutes for $30); deluxe facial (80 minutes for $45 -- this includes a facial waxing). There is also a light peel treatment for $40 and Medilift treatments for eye ($15), chin ($15), or full face ($30) or body areas ($10 per area).
Appointment time slots are 1:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Saturday. Major credit cards accepted, but tips aren't. You are asked for feedback in writing after your service.Keiser Career College 17395 NW 59th Ave. Miami Lakes; 305-820-5003
