Pool parties, musical mash-ups and more in Miami this weekend
Sundays are sublime, hide out at Hyde Beach all weekend and The Stage plays matchmaker.
If you find yourself in town this July 4th weekend, consider a little road trip across the border to Fort Lauderdale Sunday, July 7 for a staycation of sorts in the form of the Gerber Group's Sublime Sundays pool party from noon to 6 p.m. at the W Fort Lauderdale, 401 N. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. Among the festivities include bikini models sporting the latest by swimwear designer Ola Feroz. Drink specials include Whispering Angel Rose and Bacardi mojito and margarita pitchers. DJ XPress will spin. There is no cover, but for reservations and information, call 954-414-8200.
Hyde & Seek
Hyde Beach, 1701 Collins Ave., continues its beach blanket bacchanal from noon to 9 p.m. Friday, July 5 when hailed electronic producer/DJ Sydney Blu takes to the turntables for the Change the Game 2013 album tour with Justin Sheppard and Damaged Goods. From 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. it's DJ Five. On Saturday, July 6, DJ duo Manufactured Superstars take over at noon while DJ Reach presses play at 10 p.m. Hyde's hi-fi weekend culminates at noon Sunday with dance music superstar Pierce Fulton. For reservations or information, call 305-674-1701.
For the first time, Hialeah's power pop kings Humbert and downtown soul outfit Ketchy Shuby will headline The Stage's, 170 NE 38th St., post-Independence Day show at 10 p.m. on July 5. The matchup is such a love fest it only made sense for the two to get a room. “Very few bands are greater in weight than Humbert,” says the band’s front man Ferny Copiel. “Ketchy Shuby is one of them and we are very happy to be sharing the stage with them. Pound for pound, they are heavier than us.” Ketchy Shuby does pull its weight apparently, straight off a tour that took them to Austin's SXSW for a show that caught the attention of Spin Magazine. When asked his thoughts on the pairing of the two bands, lead singer/guitarist Jason Joshua Hernandez-Rodriguez said, “Humbert is my favorite band of all time. That’s all.” Also performing July 5 are DJ Heron and DJ Methods; food will be available for purchase from Monte’s Country Cajun Cooking food truck. Admission to the event is free before 10 p.m., $10 afterwards. For more information and to buy tickets, visit www.thestagemiami.com. The show is open to those 21 & over.
The Coral Gables Museum is cool for so many reasons, but one of the coolest happens to take place from July 5 through September 30 in the form of an indoor mini golf course. Designed and built by some of the leading architects, landscape architects and contractors (who actually showed up) in the Miami area, the course is located in the museum's Fewell Gallery and is designed for ages 4 and up, both biologically and mentally. Last entry time to play is 5 p.m. on weekdays and 4 p.m. on weekends. Cost is $3 plus paid admission. Course will also be available for groups after hours. Call 305-603-8067 for more information.
The arty contingency of Miami that's not summering elsewhere is throwing a mid-summer get together in honor of rising art world star and MOCA's new curator Alex Gartenfeld from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 10 at Dolce at The Gale South Beach, 1690 Collins Ave. In addition to cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, there's a pizza buffet. The party is free to members of the Moca Shakers. To join, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Stop, Drop & Shop
Because you don't already spend enough money when you go out, in celebration of the summer, The Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort, 16701 Collins Ave., is throwing a big shopping party from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, July 5 featuring swimwear, jewelry and more. To aid in the shopping process, there will be a last minute push via free open bar from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Kitchen 305. For more information, call 305-749-2110.
