Patrick Dempsey
By Madeleine Marr
Two Grey's Anatomy hunks in our midst. At the same time. Life is good!
McSteamy (Eric Dane) has been shooting scenes in Fort Lauderdale for Marley & Me with Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson. Now we have McDreamy, aka Patrick Dempsey.
The longtime racing enthusiast did a few loops at the recent Gainsco Grand Prix of Miami at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but in real life, he drives around in a big old SUV. Not surprising with three kids -- daughter Tallulah, 6, and twin boys Darby and Sullivan, who just turned 1.
"Boys are a whole different energy, " says Dempsey, from the track in between practices Friday. "They're walking and climbing and breaking everything."
The Maine native, 42, has appeared in more than 50 movies -- starting out as a goofy kid in 1985's Heaven Help Us -- but it's his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on the hit ABC show that has made him a housecall -- um, household -- name.
With his coy charm and fantastic looks -- square jaw, thick hair, piercing eyes -- he's also been the go-to hottie for romantic comedies such as Sweet Home Alabama, Enchanted and Made of Honor, to be released in May. He plays a man trying to win over an engaged woman (Michelle Monaghan from Gone Baby Gone) after she asks him to be her maid of honor. Think the guy version of My Best Friend's Wedding.
Dempsey opened up to us about his career, future plans and what to expect on Grey's, which premieres at 9 p.m. April 24.
Q: Do you like doing romantic comedies?
A: "I've done this kind of thing for every generation. Now I have little girls coming up to me for Enchanted [in which he plays a dashing prince]. But I'd like to get out of the box, not do so much commercial stuff. Not that I want to play a serial killer or anything."
Q: How does it feel to be so famous now?
A: "I've had good years and bad years. It's kind of exciting to have survived over 20 years in the business. Any employment is good."
Q: What can we expect next on Grey's?
A: "Of course, I can't say too much. There will be more interesting medical stuff. It will be a little more intense but very funny. Lots of things get resolved, things start to move forward."
Q: Why cars?
A: "Racing is a great balance for what I do. It calms you down but gives you a nice nervousness, which is really healthy, I think."
Q: We hear you will be modeling for Versace. How's that?
A: "I just want to be a supermodel. Doesn't everybody? I didn't make the cover of People's Sexiest Man Alive [in 2007]; Matt Damon did. I have all the covers of People's sexiest for the last five years on my wall."
(That was a joke, folks. )
