Out and about: La Descarga @ Yuca

By Vanessa Brito

From Albita's raspy voice to lesbians: Yuca Restaurant & Nightclub has become a well-known destination for merengue, salsa and regaetton lovers. Sadly enough, it's only a once-a-month event for lesbians, giving them more time to find something better to do.

If you're taking a stroll down Lincoln Road on the first Saturday night of the month you can expect to see a few of the older lesbians huddling over the door at Yuca. Pandora Events has taken on the "feat" of catering to Latin lesbians in Miami for over a year now. Pandora has coined the event La Descarga, or what I call Discharge - yes, this is a direct translation, I know (read below).

It's not as bad as it sounds, except for the heat. Yuca has a semi-descent second floor lounge with an A/C system that's apparently under repair the first Saturday of each month. It's almost unbearable, even on a cool night. Inside upstairs, there's no choice but to shoot for a beer to cool off. Unfortunately, this puts a huge damper on the night once the ladies start to get down and dirty on the dance floor.

Those of you who don't mind perspiration, La Descarga is for you. There's plenty of it and it's free, unlike the $10 cover with a nice climb up a dark stairwell. It's not all terrible though, the go-go dancers are pretty damn hot, contributing to the lesbian go-go dancer three T's syndrome: Touch, Tip and Torture. Drink prices are in line with SoBe standards.

The music is pretty status quo, especially if you dig Shakira, Juanes and Bob Sinclair... in that order. The vibe is pretty chill, I must admit. Most of the women play musical lesbians, changing partners every time there's a change in genre. Picture this: you're doing the salsa thing with the slightly older, soft butch; cumbia comes on, you look over, there's that 22-year old with long black hair and a tube top; you hear "Gasolina" and you figure the safest bet is to grind on your best friend from Puerto Rico. At the end of the night, you realize that she can shake her booty so much better than the other two and thus, end up having ham croquets at David's Café at about 4:00 a.m. (you know it is true).

Pandora pushes for a theme each month; although this doesn't seem to make much of a difference. The regulars seem happy, regardless. With a lack of Saturday night hangouts in Miami for lesbians, an actual event is enough of an incentive. Besides, Pandora is well-known in the community, enough that their theme is really their identity. Girls you find at La Descarga have probably been going to Pandora events for quite some time.

Tips for a memorable experience at La Descarga: dress light; don't flirt with the door girl, her girlfriend is usually around; it's very dark; don't spend money on dinner at the restaurant - instead go to David's and have the same thing cheaper; take a dance partner; bring a Spanish speaker if you're not; wear comfy shoes with good soles for the wooden dance floor; and don't worry, the ceiling is black, it's not falling.
