Not your average vampire

Playing a vampire on Being Human wasn’t Sam Witwer’s ideal gig.

Playing a vampire on Being Human wasn’t Sam Witwer’s ideal gig.

A friend had to convince him to read the script. “I didn’t want to be the guy who was cast on another vampire show,” Witwer says. Luckily, he listened to his buddy: “Once I read the script, I fell in love with the character and thought, ‘I have to play this guy.’ ”

On the Syfy show, Witwer plays Aidan, a Boston nurse by day, vampire by night.

He’s never seen Twilight but gets why fans like vampire-themed movies and TV shows.

“There’s this sexual element to vampires. Think back to [ Dracula star] Béla Lugosi.”

On the show, Witwer is more interested in helping Aidan overcome his addictions. He compares his need to drink blood to that of “a drug addict.” But in real life the hunky star, who studied at Julliard, keeps it clean. “I don’t drink or smoke,” he says. “My biggest addictions are video games and eating sushi.”

A big fan of sci-fi movies and director George Lucas, Witwer, who has starred on Battlestar Galactica and Smallville , also voiced part I and II of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed video game.

His deep, sexy voice may have impressed Lucas but almost got him in trouble with former. Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“I was at a party, and my friend wanted me to do my Arnold impersonation in front of [Schwarzenegger],” he said. “So my girlfriend and I got out of there pretty fast. I didn’t want to p*** off the Terminator.”
