Girly action: Aqua Girl invades South Beach
$2 Bud Light specials and Aqua Girl weekend are the only two things that can bring so many hot lesbians together. Seriously though, Aqua Girl has been a Miami resident for eight years now and is the only women's party south of Kissimmee that caters to gay women around the nation. I can honestly say that even Gay Disney pales in comparison to this SOBE women's fest - for the girls at least.
Founders of the Aqua Girl Foundation, the not-for-profit organization that hosts Aqua Girl (from which proceeds are donated in the form grants, scholarships and program support for lesbian and transgender affiliates), finally figured it out. Miami cannot continue being a lonesome harbor for gay men alone. Women need their fair share of the coast and frankly, Dina Shore is a bit too far and too expensive these days. So, brace yourselves Miami. From May 14-18, the ladies are coming to the Magic City.
Four days, 14 parties, 4,000 women. The event offers passes to fit everyone's budget, even during this forsaken recession. From blue-collar to platinum-collar lesbians, Aqua Girl is your Super Wal-Mart for the weekend. If you're set on not buying a VIP or weekend pass, or not sure if you can withstand all fourteen events, here are the parties you can't afford to miss:
Traffic Jam/Thursday, May 15/10 p.m. @ Score
Best part about this party, you can lie about your relationship status, or at least keep them intrigued (until your girlfriend or ex shows up). Women are greeted with glow in the dark necklaces that match their status: green if you're single; yellow if you're somewhere in the lesbian gray zone; and red for "if you mess with me, my girlfriend will condemn you on MySpace," or just "taken." This party proves to be a blast for both spectators and partiers.
Aqualicious Pool Party/ Saturday, May 17/11 a.m. @ The Surfcomber Hotel
If you can only afford one ticket, this is the one you NEED to buy. Nice wet booties covered with powdery sand, what more can you ask for? This Saturday pool party is Aqua Girl's signature event, regardless of age, weight, status or anything in between, and it brings thousands of women together without the drama, discriminating tastes or weak livers. Best of all, it is THE party where women embrace their freedom the most (and it shows).
Jazz Brunch/Sunday, May 18/11 a.m./ @ The Hotel Victor
If you've eaten at the Hotel Victor, I don't think you need any other reason to be there on Sunday. Yes, it's hard to wake up after the Saturday night party, but you might as well make the effort and treat yourself to a mimosa upon arrival. The place is enchanting and unconventional. For non-Miamians this is a place you definitely need to check out, as it strays from the typical SoBe image you're used to.
If you're not into dancing or brunching, a few dinner events and comedy show are good alternatives. Be sure to hit the Welcome to Paradise reception at the Surfcomber on May 15th to pick up your tickets and meet all the non-Miami lesbians joining us for the weekend. The reception is free, but cocktails aren't. If you're from Miami and planning to party the entire weekend, look into booking at the Surfcomber. The rates have gone down significantly. Plus, if you pack a few good lesbians into the room, you'll be sure to have an interesting and inexpensive weekend getaway.
