Venus Williams

By Aurora Rodríguez

For tennis star turned fashion designer Venus Williams, South Florida is more than just a place she enjoys to visit to kick back and relax. Although the two-time U.S. Open and four-time Wimbledon Champion was born and raised in California, she now calls West Palm Beach her home - and Miami her playground.
“I’m a South Florida girl now,” she said. “I’m doing great here, and I’m not leaving.”
Williams took some time to chat with us about her accomplishments and favorite South Florida spots while she promoted the launch of her casual sportswear and jewelry line, EleVen, at Steve and Barry’s inside The Mall at 163rd in North Miami Beach.

What do you love about Miami?
"I actually live in West Palm Beach now, but I do go to Miami a lot. I love the area’s energy. You really can’t get much more love from a city. It has everything, including a great nightlife and weather."

What are some of your favorite Miami spots?
"I love sitting by the pool at the Raleigh hotel and just relaxing, then going out dancing to the Red Room at night. It’s lots of fun."

What are your favorite Miami restaurants?
"Two of my favorite restaurants are Prime 112 in Miami Beach and Nobu at The Shore Club. The food is fantastic there."

Any recent accomplishments you’re proud of?
"I just graduated from the Art Institute in Fort Lauderdale, so I have my degree. I’m very proud of that. I don’t have it on today, but I usually wear my graduation ring every day."

So, about your line…why the name EleVen?
"It’s about feeling good about yourself and empowered. I want people to feel good in their clothes. If I think I look good, I feel good. The number eleven represents a feeling that’s more than just a ‘ten’."
