Tony Kanaan

By J.R. Biersmith

Indy driver and Key Biscayne resident Tony Kanaan has a fairly simple Coral Gables office with just one exception - the car collection on the other side of the glass partition. This "office" just happens to come with a custom red Ferrari, Porsche GT3, Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series, BMW M3, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, 2008 Smart-Fortwo and a Go-Kart with the name Leonardo Kanaan - a gift from teammate Danica Patrick for his 6 month old son.
We caught up with Kanaan to discuss life on Key Biscayne, his passion for cars and triathlons.

If you could snap your fingers and change one thing about Miami what would it be?
I would make the Heat the best team in the NBA. I think I would go ahead and make the Dolphins into the best team in the NFL too. That's two snaps.  I guess I would use my snap to make the Miami sports teams into the best teams in their League.

As a resident of Key Biscayne where is your favorite place to grab a bite?
I like to go get pizza at Sir Pizza. My favorite thing to order is cheese pizza with ground beef.

In one of the rare instances that you uncover one of the cars in your "office" is there a stretch of highway or a section of town you like to drive?
My favorite place to drive in Miami is on the Key Biscayne Bridge.  The view is beautiful, you are way up high, and I live on Key Biscayne, so when I am on that bridge, I know I am heading home.

Is there one aspect that is unique to Homestead Speedway in comparison to another venue or track?
The most unusual thing about Homestead-Miami Speedway is its variable banking, or incline in its four turns.  Most tracks have banking in the turns, but it's all the same degree, like Indianapolis Motor Speedway has a  9 degree banking in the turns. Homestead is different because the banking in turns goes from 18 to 20 degrees.  This makes the racing very competitive and exciting to watch.

Most of the time we see you in shirts with your sponsors logo, 7-11, but where do you shop for jeans and other clothes?
I usually shop on South Beach and Lincoln Road, particularly at Astoria.  When I'm not in my fire suit, you will probably find me wearing jeans and a T-shirt.  Today I am wearing one that says "everyone loves an Italian boy."  I'm Brazilian, but today I am in disguise.

What is your favorite bar?
I would have to say Sky Bar.
