Winter Music Conference: we got the beats

By Jay Rooney

Winter Music Conference, described by Massachusetts House DJ Steve Porter as "Electronic Music's New Year," is about to descend on Miami once again, this year from Tuesday, March 25, to Sunday, March 30. WMC has something for everybody, from DJs, producers, journalists and industry insiders to dance enthusiasts (both locals and tourists).

Since the sheer number of events makes it physically impossible to attend each and every one of them, we've combed through the event listings to bring you the best of the best, as well as tips on how to maximize your WMC experience.

ATTENDING EVENTS
Certain events are either officially sanctioned by WMC or offer discounted rates for WMC registrees. To register for WMC access, you must go in person to the Miami Beach Resort & Spa (4833 Collins Ave.) and register. Registration costs $440 per person. If you're an aspiring DJ and wish to attend a workshop, it'll set you back $75 per workshop.

However, there are many unofficial events that are just as good. Prices vary, and, depending on the performer and venue, can sell out quickly. Most of these events offer advance purchasing, which is recommended, as it guarantees you entry (however, you should expect longer lines than usual), and is invariably cheaper than paying at the door.

Some daytime events are free. These sessions are usually short, though, lasting a couple hours at most and hardly live up to a regular pool party or night at a club. But if you've got some spare time and a DJ you particularly like is spinning, it's worth checking out.

Almost all of the events offer advance ticket purchases, which is highly recommended, as many of these events are likely to sell out or, if you're lucky, have a mile-long line to get in. Be sure to secure your spot while there's still time.

TRANSPORTATION & LODGING
As one can imagine, Miami, and especially South Beach, is going to be incredibly congested during the Conference. If you already live in Miami Beach or are lucky enough to have booked a hotel there, this shouldn't be a problem, but keep in mind traffic and parking will be a hassle you'll have to take into account. Allot at least an extra hour to your usual clubbing schedule to account for this.

ATTIRE
The vast majority of events will take place in nightclubs, so follow the usual clubbing rules: dress to impress. As a guideline, think about the best you've ever dressed before going out, and try and top that. The main exceptions to this rule are the pool parties, where you'd best be prepared to get wet, and Ultra Music Festival, where you can dress any way you want.
