Sony Ericsson Open

By Michelle Kaufman

So, you want to see the Sony Ericsson Open tennis tournament, which runs through April 6? Here are five tips. . . .

That’s the Ticket
Call the tournament ticket office at 305-442-3367 or go to the box office on-site once the tournament starts. Don’t expect to find scalpers milling around these parts.

Park it
If your ticket comes with a parking pass, you will park in one of the ample Crandon Park beach lots and safely cross the divided highway with the help of a crossing guard. Otherwise, follow the signs for general parking as you enter Rickenbacker causeway, approaching Virginia Beach. There is a convenient park-and-ride lot with buses that run every few minutes.

Yum-yum
One of the main reasons to go to the Sony is the food. You want a custom-made salad? They’ve got it. Sushi and crab cakes? Got those. Cuban food? Si, senor. Crepes? Oui, oui! Starbucks? Why, of course! For dessert – Ben and Jerry’s. Eat outside under umbrellas and watch the beautiful people go by.

Nice view
A center-court seat for the men’s and women’s final certainly is nice. But the most exciting days to attend a tennis tournament are during the first and second rounds (March 26-28), when all the star players are still alive. Roam the outer courts and you’ll be amazed how close to you can get to world-class tennis. Also, check out the top few rows of the main stadium for an incredible view of Biscayne Bay - stunning at sunset.

Sneaky Secrets
The three best places to get autographs are by the practice courts, near the player outdoor dining area and near the VIP entrance at Gate H, which is where celebrities and players (and their hot girlfriends/boyfriends) are dropped off.
