New spaces to enjoy cocktails are popping-up around Miami
From Brickell to Boca, find your new spot and order a drink this weekend
A boozy wanderlust has struck the folks at the currently without a home restaurant The Dining Room in the form of The Blacksmith, a Friday night-only pop-up showing up at The Well (444 West 41st St., Miami Beach) on Sept. 28. Among the offerings: "an artisanal bottle service starting at $200 that will feature an interactive experience with an array of condiments," including bar snacks such as black sea-salt dusted popcorn and Peruvian corn nuts," recipe cards and multiple mixers to turn any big spender into an erstwhile mixologist. A small plates menu by Chef Horacio Rivadero will offer $12 dishes of filet mignon skewers with red beet chimichuri, Florida gulf shrimp ceviche with pink grapefruit, black peppercorns and pink sea salt, and a chorizo corn dog with fresh ground mustard. The Blacksmith also has a 'fully ventilated" cigar bar featuring all sorts of smokes including "flavored cigars for the ladies." A six-piece house band cultivated by local musician Buffalo Brown will play "jazzy rock covers." Doors will open at 8:30 p.m. every Friday.
South Beach nightlife vets Gary James and Louis Canales have crossed over the causeway to the Mayfair Hotel & Spa (3000 Florida Ave., Miami), where they are doing all sorts of events, from a Friday night happy hour and a Sunday afternoon pool party to a Thursday night dinner party, Amarcord (named after the Fellini classic), starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4 at the hotel's restaurant Spartico. "The evening has a chill, romantic, sexy vibe and includes live entertainment featuring rotating male and female singers performing standards in the style of Harry Connick, Jr., Shirley Horn, Michael Buble, and Julie Wilson," Canales tells us. A special menu of pastas for $9.99 will be offered. More flashbacks of a different nature, this time in Boca Raton, where the old Coconut Grove meat market known as Baja Beach Club will debut at 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 in the space formerly known as Club Boca, 7000 W. Palmetto Park Rd. Says a publicist, "It's more than just a dance club, it is every beach party you ever went to only amped up several notches." Those notches include Ladies Night on Wednesday, bikini contests Thursday and, well, enough said. For more information go to www.bajaboca.com.
Once in a Full Moon
Playing down in Islamorada at Pierre's and Morada Bay Beach Cafe's ethereally excellent Full Moon Party Saturday, Sept. 29: The Spam All-Stars. The arty will also have DJs, a bonfire, fireworks, a Bahamian Junkanoo band, performers, flame throwers and, oh yeah, that moon. Entrance is $15 for beach access and $30 for beach and Pierre's access. Doors open at 5 p.m. and Spam All-Stars start at 9 p.m.
The views are still the same (albeit with less construction cranes and a few more high rises) and there's still a pool, but the former Club 50 at the Viceroy (485 Brickell Ave., Miami) has been reinvented as, uh, welll, Fifty Ultra Lounge, debuting Friday, Sept. 28 with Saeed Younan and Mr. Mauricio and continuing on Saturday with Starkillers and Jessica Who. “Fifty stories above Brickell, our new ultra lounge offers a visual experience unlike any other in Miami,” said Manager Brandon Kraese. “But it’s the music, VIP service and an unwavering attention to detail that will establish us as the area’s quintessential hotspot.” VIP or not, the place will be open at 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday nights and will feature a rotating roster of international and local DJs. For reservations email email@example.com.
Raising the Bar
Everyone has their own personal Cheers, but not everyone has the "Ultimate Miami Bartender," or, rather, the winner of a competition of that name taking place at 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 at Stage 305 at the Magic City Casino (450 NW 37th Ave., Miami). While the finalists compete for title and $5,000 cash prize, the rest will be entertained by Grammy nominated American pop punk band Bowling for Soup and judge Elaine Lancaster, among others. A $40 cover includes admission, a drink from the bar and tastings of the winning drink.
