I like to balance my decadence (and by decadence I mean a cupcake every three years) with things that, in my mind, give me the butt of a part-time yoga instructor/part-time swimsuit model. That said, I give you the next edition of Stuff I Like: things that make me skinny. Or at least not dread putting on jeans that just came out of the dryer.

Coconut Grove Farmer's Market
If I actually cooked, I would come here weekly to stock up on fresh veggies (everything from normal stuff like cucumbers to slightly weirder stuff like tamarind), fruits and spices. Glaser Farms sets up a full-on grocery store under its tent -- minus meat, cheese, bread and toothpaste - but since my food shopping consists of cereal and milk, I'm glad they also have already prepared selections: wraps made w/ Japanese nori sheets, avocado salad, every fruit juice known to man and even dairy-free ice cream. If you don't like going to Whole Foods because you feel like a health yuppie, take it to Grand Ave., where the market takes place every Saturday.

Kashi Go Lean Crunchy Bars
Even before I wrote this paragraph I went to Amazon and bought myself a 24-count variety pack of these delicious, healthy treats. My love for Kashi started with its Cinnamon Harvest cereal. If I'm in a cluster kind of mood, I'll opt for Crunch! and if I'm in a raisin-y mood, I'll go for the one with the picture of two women who look like they're an Oxygen Network series. A staunch Luna Bar consumer, I was hesitant to try Kashi's bars, but decided to give them a whirl. There are several varieties, but the Crunch line is by far the best. They come in flavors like Chocolate Peanut and Caramel Peanut and taste like Rice Krispies Treats. Stay away from the Chewy line, they taste like expired military rations.

Lululemon Yoga Outfits
Okay, so technically an outfit can't make you skinny, unless it's Spanx. And technically I haven't done yoga in six months (pulled my hammy during an Iron Man competition), but Lululemon's yoga outfits not only manage to make me look (or at least feel) slimmer when I'm in my chi-chi SoBe gym, where everyone looks like a MetRX ad model, they also work for any exercise scenario. Treadmill. Ab class. Big, scary weight machines that look like the printing equipment in the Herald basement. That's because Lululemon tests their designs on hundreds of women. Then they re-design and test until they get it right. The other great thing about their outfits is they're reversible. So really you're getting two outfits for the price (about $100) of one. And in my case, that's enough for an entire week (don't want to aggravate that hammy).

You did an Iron Man? Wow. P.S. The Herald printing equipment is actually on the upper floors. I think it's the only newspaper in the country like that, so in case of rising waters we can still print it. Only our cars will float away, since the garage is under the building. ... Read more
