From Ocean Drive to Sports Illustrated, cover gal Irina Shayk is making waves in the modeling industry. The Russian beauty, girlfriend of soccer stud Cristiano Ronaldo, chatted with us about her most famous cover to date and how she keeps herself swimsuit sexy.

Congrats on becoming the cover girl of Sports Illustrated. How do you feel?

“I’m so happy! It was such a shock I still can’t believe it, even after walking by news stands seeing my cover everywhere. It’s surreal. I have had many covers overseas but when you have a U.S. cover it’s fun to see in shops.

What are your beauty secrets? How do you stay in shape?

“Sunscreen and plenty of water of course, also I work out with my trainer [Justin Gelbain] four times a week so I can eat whatever I want. You have to be happy on the inside ’cause it shows on your face.”

You starred in the music video for Kanye West’s Power . What’s it like working with him?

“A lot of people say bad things about Kanye, but he is actually such an amazing person and an artist that brings art, fashion and culture references to music. He’s one of the most creative people I know.”

Who is your fave designer?

“I think any women should start with what’s underneath the clothes first, I love Intimissimi lingerie. It fits any woman, any age, any occasion ... plus it makes me feel sexy! For clothes I love to mix and match vintage with like H&M and high-end designers like Dolce & Gabbana, Versace and Marc Jacobs. Isabel Marant fur coat is a must for a Russian.’’

What was the Sports Illustrated photo shoot like?

“I have been working with SI for five years; it’s like a family. It’s more fun than work. Everyone’s energy and attitude is the best. We visit the best locations in the world, and the first time I went to Hawaii I got a cover so now Hawaii is my new favorite place."

What swimsuit trends are making a comeback?

“On the last page of the SI 2011 Swim issue you can see the trends of the summer if you want to ‘shayk your booty.’ But for more conservative people the high-waisted suit is back, and I love to mix and match different tops and bottoms with different patterns.’’

Any upcoming projects?

“Right now I’m concentrating on my modeling and enjoying my cover. I don’t worry much more [about what’s] to come.”
