Michelle Bernstein leaving the Omphoy
Michelle Bernstein leaving the Omphoy
1/23/2012
Breaking culinary news - as of Wednesday, Feb 1 Michelle Bernstein will be packing up her knives and leaving the Omphoy Ocean Resort in Palm Beach. No word why. A two-sentence press release notes that Bernstein and her husband/partner David Martinez will continue to own/operate Sra. Martinez, Michy’s and Crumb on Parchment in Miami. Bernstein opened the namesake Palm Beach restaurant in 2009, promising a seafood-heavy mixture of cultures and flavors. Michelle Bernstein at the Omphoy earned 1.5 stars from the Sun Sentinel in 2010.
The New Times notes that "Bernstein was a consultant more than a chef" at the Omphoy and that Bernstein's departure shouldn't affect Miami locals who have access to her other three properties very much. Eater notes that The Omphoy was rescued from bankruptcy last summer by US Senate candidate Jeff Greene, who purchased the hotel for $42 million.
Bernstein fans can catch up with the hometown hero tonight as the new season of Check, Please! airs at 7:30pm on WPBT-Channel 2. Episodes repeat Wednesdays at 7:30p and Saturdays at 5:30pm. This season's reviewed restaurants include Hy Vong, Candela, Hakkasan and Lifefood Gourmet.
