Went to this place before a show at the Arsht Center and had ample time to order, eat then make the show except for the fact that the food took forever. Don't know if this is common, but when it finally made it to the table we were completely underwhelmed by the grouper, tasted like they just put a dash of salt on it then stuck it in the oven and they served it with brussel sprouts (which were good, but I still classify as punishment food). The caipirinhas were nice, a bit pricy ($11) but good. The waitress was super nice and apologized profusely for the delay, but all in all we were impressed mainly by the ambiance and little else. ... This place is just awesome. You feel like you're dining at a great restaurant in Manhattan (which is maybe why the New York Times recently chose it as a top new restaurant outside of New York). The service is great, the food is tasty, adventuresome (only place in SoFla where I've seen kimchi on the menu) and inventive. You will not be disappointed. Also, and I hope restaurants on the Beach read this, the food is reasonably priced given the quality. I leave this place thinking they could have charged more money, as opposed to my experience with just about every new place that opens on the Beach!... Read more

I am dying to try this place. I have heard nothing but good things. There is so much buzz around this place... such a celeb hot spot.

We went to Michaels Genuine as a group of six on a busy night – I hope our experience was unusual. Right away the tone was set when the hostess acted annoyed that we showed up five minutes early for our reservation – somehow we were putting her out. After 15 minutes we were seated at a table right at the entrance – which was too large for the space and in the middle of the flow of traffic, meaning everyone bumped our chairs as they filed past, staff and patron alike. The food was excellent – everyone at the table, everyone was quite satisfied with the taste. Certainly the menu was not run of the mill – the combinations and the ingredients were un-usual, but absolutely perfect. I found the prices atypical and quite reasonable – about $50/person with a glass of wine each. Im not a fan of loud restaurants – but if you like them loud and having to yell your “conversation” and order to the wait staff, this is the place for you. The service mirrored our initial experience – one grade above dismal. The waiter was absent most of the time and accounted for a lingering dinner. The wait for everything from a cocktail to the check was unusually long. At least three ordered drinks never made it to the table (luckily they didn’t show up on the check). When the appetizers and entrées were delivered they were correct, just that the waiter and the staff had no idea which one us was to receive which dish – normally something that can be overlooked, if it wasn’t the case with EVERY dish and cocktail, not to mention the logistics of yelling over the “cheerful din” – hey that’s mine!!! The bus staff had the unusual habit of selecting specific items they wanted to remove from the table – while ignoring other items that clearly were finished. Finally to insult to injury – our mostly absent waiter pointed out as he delivered the check the restaurant policy of adding an automatic 20 percent gratuity to tables of six or more. The lesson being; keep your table to five or less if you want good service – though I wouldn’t hold my breath. After a long wait, we finally resorted to having the busboy locate the waiter to process our check – about 3 past the last straw in my book. The food truly is great – the experience is not. Our experience may have been unusual – and its clearly a popular restaurant. I have no plans to return, but am keeping an open mind that its possible to fix the service problems. Plus: Food preparation and ingenuity, wine list, décor Neutral: Price Minus: Noise, Service ... Read more

Must haves: The chili and lime hominy, the pizzas, the sweetbreads and the AMAZING crostone. Who would have thought that chocolate and sea salt would be so delectable?... Read more

About

In his bustling Design District restaurant, Michael Schwartz (Nemo and the late afterglo) is doing what he does best: cooking fresh, well-sourced, straightforward food with an emphasis on local and seasonal ingredients. With its reasonable pricing (you can splurge but you don't have to), the New American menu is organized by plate size, from snacks to extra-large entrees, so you'll want to stop by often for standouts like crisp hominy nuggets and yellow fin tuna tartare, whole roasted snapper and flavorful poulet rouge, strawberry shortcake and a scrumptious chocolate egg sprinkled with sea salt. Reservations are a must in prime time.
