Zika forces Lagunitas to cancel Miami Beer Circus in Wynwood

The Lagunitas Beer Circus in Wynwood has been canceled over Zika concerns

Zika has something more bitter than beer for Wynwood on National IPA Day.

Lagunitas Brewing in California, which hosts a funky Beer Circus in five major U.S. cities and was coming to Miami for the first time, has canceled the event on August 27 over Zika virus fears in Wynwood.

“With the Centers for Disease Control warning that anyone traveling to the Wynwood area would be put in a health compromising situation, we do not feel that continuing with our first-ever Miami Circus on August 27th appropriate,” the company wrote in a statement. “We value the well-being of our employees, local partners and general public above all else…. “We hope that all in the Wynwood and Miami areas remain healthy and happy.”

Wynwood is the only location in the continental United States where the Zika virus, which causes birth defects when the mother contracts the virus, is known to have been contracted locally.

Several outdoor restaurants and venues, such as the Wynwood Yard and Miami Culinary Tours, have closed indefinitely over the discovery that at least a dozen people have contracted the virus inside a 1-square-mile area that includes Wynwood.

Miami-Dade County has been blanketing a 10-mile area surrounding Wynwood with pesticide, and Miami mayor Tomas Regalado toured the area trying to assuage fears over the virus.
