One week after opening New England-style seafood restaurant Izzy’s Fish & Oyster at 423 Washington Ave. in South Beach, chef-owner Jamie DeRosa says he will close his neighboring modern American restaurant, Tongue & Cheek, at 431 Washington Ave.
Tongue & Cheek received a three-star Miami Herald review several months after opening in April 2013. It will close after brunch service Sunday.
At 150-plus seats, Tongue & Cheek is a significantly larger restaurant than the intimate-by-comparison Izzy’s, which seats about 40. DeRosa says the development of Izzy’s reminded him of his love for smaller, scaled-down, neighborhood-vibe restaurants, and that he hopes to relocate the Tongue & Cheek concept soon to a more-compact space.
Meanwhile, DeRosa says the early response to Izzy’s has been positive. The restaurant opened Sept. 30 with chef de cuisine William Crandall and mixologist Maxwell Parise leading the food and drink duties.
Look for two more Izzy’s outposts to crop up “in Florida” in 2016, DeRosa says, along with a separate project TBA in downtown Miami.
