The who: La Feria by Mercado de San Miguel, the official ambassador of the Mercado de San Miguel food market located in Madrid, Spain, has reopened in downtown Miami’s Bayfront Park for a seasonal run until January. The culinary experience is overseen by Chef Xavi Oteiza, who along with Valle has created four main “kiosks” in the form of free standing, themed mini shops.
The space: A sprawling 9,000-square-foot tent outfitted with string lights, a hardwood floor and lush landscaping. Tables are centered around a circular bar, and live music with authentic Spanish dancers lends the place a festive atmosphere.
The dishes: Small plates made for lingering. The mini kiosks that circle the dining space offer a “pay-as-you-go” tapas experience with vendors offering things such as fresh-made paella, cheese platters, sliced jamon and various cuts of meat. Prices are reasonable with small plates going for $4-$17 and platters $20-$22. Steaks are $22.
The Meat Kiosk serves Secreto Iberico, a premium cut of Iberian-bred pork, a Hot Dog of Butiffara, a hot dog-inspired sausage with the flavors of the classic Catalonian Butiffara; and Beef Churrasco, which, like all of the meat served from this kiosk, is cooked in a Josper – a Spanish charcoal grill oven known for preserving flavors with meats cooked at incredibly high temperatures. The Fish Kiosk displays a raw bar selection and offers cold seafood preparations including iced, sweet red prawns, oysters, king crab and other seasonal seafood while the Pintxos Kiosk, also known as the “tapas emporium,” offers a daily changing variety of small bites.
The dessert cart offers sweets such as the Tarta de Santiago, the iconic almond tart of northern Spain; Tres Chocolates, a decadent three-chocolate cake, and the Nougat de Turron de Jijona crème brûlée style.
Bottom line: A pop-up market and dining experience that authentically captures the feeling of the Madrid-based original.
