Florida may have gotten snubbed in this week’s Food & Wine magazine announcement of its 10 Best New Chefs of 2015, but Miami is represented in the mag’s group of 100 People’s Best New Chef nominees, out this morning.
Jose Mendin, chef-partner of Miami’s Pubbelly restaurant group, and Deme Lomas, chef-partner of Niu Kitchen, are two of 100 U.S. chefs up for the award, which is determined by voting through April 8 at foodandwine.com.
It is the fifth year that F&W has hosted the people’s-choice awards to honor “up-and-coming innovators who have run their own kitchens for five years or fewer,” and it’s the fourth year that Mendin has been a nominee. It is Lomas’ first nomination; his restaurant opened last year at 134 NE Second Ave. in Miami.
“I am truly honored to be nominated for the fourth year in a row, among such talented chefs from around the country,” Mendin said. “It’s an even greater honor for me to be representing Miami.”
The People’s Best New Chef nominees are grouped in 10 regional categories, with Florida included in the Gulf Coast region. Besides Mendin and Lomas, the others in their category are:
