Chef Scott Linquist of Coyo Taco branches out with this sit-down spot on the western end of Lincoln Road. The meaning behind Olla translates to a ceramic jar used for cooking where dishes are served in shareable bowls for a family-style experience.
The former Altamare space has been jazzed up with a mural behind the bar painted by Juan Manuel Rozas in the style of Diego Rivera and a color palette of grey, orange and blue.
Regional Mexican from Oaxaca to Puebla, Yucatan to Veracruz, and beyond. Prices are reasonable with small plates $7-$14 and larger mains $11-$24.
Start off with guacamole prepared tableside. Then it’s on to “Tarro” jars — layered dishes — in varieties of smoked salmon and boiled egg, beets and walnut cream and lamb tartare. The “Olla” pots section features cast iron pans of warm dishes such as huitlacoche corn “truffles” with wild mushrooms, toasted garlic, chile de arbol, queso fresco and cauliflower with roasted poblano crema.
Enchiladas comes in three varieties: queso, chicken and short rib. The “Mole” section features four types, including a “Coloradito” made with duck breast and sour cherry salsita. All main dishes come with corn or flour tortillas and some feature blue masa tortillas from Taquiza’s sibling Masienda.
Desserts keep the Mexican vibe going with a cajeta flan topped with a raspberry compote and toasted nuts.
