As Michelle Bernstein inches closer toward opening her all-new Michy’s (6927 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) — new interior, new menu, even a new name — after a nine-month revamp, the chef-restaurateur’s key kitchen crew is in place:
Mikey Mayta, chef de cuisine. Mayta is a Johnson & Wales graduate who previously worked at Michy’s for nearly three years and is co-owner of Miami’s Illegal Bakery.
Keily Vasquez, pastry chef. Vasquez is Mayta’s partner at Illegal; they met while working at Michy’s, where Vasquez cooked for two years. Sounds like Illegal’s French macarons, whimsical pop-tarts, “Smoreos” and other sweets could make an appearance on the Michy’s 2.0 dessert menu.
Bernstein says she’s excited about her kitchen team and is targeting an April opening. She’s started several new projects during the Michy’s renovations, including Seagrape restaurant at the Thompson Miami Beach, a hospital partnership, a credit card-airport lounge partnership and a new Saturday-morning TV show making its premiere April 11 on WPLG-Channel 10.
