Jumbo's closes after 59-year run in Miami's Liberty City

Jumbo’s, a 24-hour diner that fried up many tons of shrimp and chicken during its 59-year run in Miami’s Liberty City, is closing its doors permanently.

Besides its food, Jumbo’s place in the community was cemented thanks to its actions during the Civil Rights era, when it was among the very first Miami restaurants to hire black employees and integrate its seating areas.

In 2008, Jumbo’s earned a James Beard Award (nominated by Miami Herald food critic Victoria Pesce Elliott), designating it as an American Classic.
