Two of the six top-grossing independent restaurants in the United States operate within a few blocks of each other in Miami Beach’s South of Fifth neighborhood, according to Restaurant Business’ 2014 rankings, out this week.
Joe’s Stone Crab (No. 2) reported $35.3 million in annual sales while Prime 112 (No. 6) grossed $23.3 million. Fifty-eight-point-six million dollars: That’s a lot of crab and steak.
Joe’s, which opens Wednesday for its 101st season, sold 339,924 meals at a check average of $65 a person. That staggering number of covers for the 486-seat restaurant is even more impressive considering that Joe’s closes between May and October each year.
The 138-seat Prime 112 sold 280,000 meals at a $115 check average, according to Restaurant Business.
The country’s top-performing independent restaurant is Tao Asian Bistro in Las Vegas, which grossed $64.6 million and served 790,000 meals in the past year. Its average check is $75.
