Joe's Stone Crab opens for the 2012-13 season on Miami Beach

Let the feasting begin – Joe’s Stone Crab is officially open for the 2012 season. Stone crab season officially begins Monday, but the Miami Beach icon is serving crabs frozen from last year’s season to throngs of hungry – and patient – crowds in the meantime. Reported wait times (Joe’s doesn’t accept reservations) for Thursday dinner neared six hours, Here’s all you need to know…

  • Dinner service begins at 5pm daily
  • Lunch service begins at 11:30am Tuesday
  • Take Away is open
  • Prices opened at last year’s numbers – $25.95 for medium claws to $71.95 for jumbos
  • Prices for the official start of the season will be set next week, but Joe’s COO and third generation family operator Stephen Sawitz reports new numbers will be “pretty close” to last year’s
  • Joe’s is gearing up for its 100th anniversary celebration, running January-October 15, 2013
  • It started as a lunch counter created by Joe Weiss in 1913 and has grown into a nationally-iconic 450-seat restaurant
  • Fans are invited to share their favorite Joe’s memories at, the best stories could result in free dinners
  • Additional centennial celebrations include a documentary film, a book and some collector’s memorabilia
  • Last year, Joe’s sold 300,000 pounds of stone crabs in Miami Beach — and another 100,000 in partner restaurants in Chicago and Las Vegas, per Sawitz
