Scholar and author Jessica B. Harris, the pre-eminent chronicler of African-American food ways, headlines a Distinguished Visiting Chef dinner Friday at Johnson & Wales University, 1701 NE 127{+t}{+h} St., North Miami.

The evening begins with a 6 p.m. reception featuring hors d’oeuvres such as deviled ham spread, benne seed wafers, black-eyed pea cakes and green banana escabeche. The meal includes peanut soup, pulled pork, greens, hoppin’ John, stone-ground grits and, for dessert, molasses pie, Louisiana bread pudding and peach cobbler.
